Why donating to research matters

"It all made me wonder what is going to happen to future victims of Alzheimer’s which is turning into an epidemic disease, if not a pandemic, and who was going to cover the exorbitant costs? Would our government be able to afford it? The statistics re the number of future victims are overwhelming! "

Dorothy's Story

TThe loss of my husband due to Alzheimer disease made me very aware that there was no treatment nor cure or prevention for this horrific disease. The suffering of both patient and family was intense and the expenses for caregivers were astronomical!

It all made me wonder what is going to happen to future victims of Alzheimer’s which is turning into an epidemic disease, if not a pandemic, and who was going to cover the exorbitant costs? Would our government be able to afford it? The statistics re the number of future victims are overwhelming!

It then became apparent to me that we must do away with this horrific disease and the damage it was going to do to our economy and our country.  I believed that research to find a prevention and a cure was the only answer and so I searched in Montreal for researchers who were addressing their work with this mission. Fortunately with the help of the Montreal Jewish general Hospital foundation, I was able to meet Dr. Andrea Leblanc a McGill university researcher at the lady Davis Institute who was doing some incredible work in this area. Together, we attempted to raise money to meet her basic research needs.

However, I felt that our source of funding was limited to one institution and that our research could be speeded up and more successful by expanding our efforts to the larger community of Montreal. Therefore together with the Jewish General Hospital foundation and the Montreal neurological Institute we initiated the Montreal Alzheimer's Research for a Cure program – MARC - with the hope of promoting awareness as to the needs to support research and collecting donations to help meet these needs as well as giving Montreal an identity in this research endeavor.  We are planning to recruit more scientists in Montreal who are also searching for a cure and prevention of Alzheimer's disease. The research developments are very promising and if sufficient funds are donated, we could possibly see success within the next few years!

Together We Can Make A Difference
